Inuit Art |
While there are a number of types of Inuit fabric arts, perhaps the most well-known are the exquisitely appliquéd wallhangings. Wallhangings are traditionally made of felt cut-outs appliquéd on wool or duffle background, then embellished with embroidery. The images are comprised of scenes of hunting and camping activities, as well as shamanism, mythic heroes, and legends. The picture on the left is of Agnes Iqqugaqtuq with one of her fabric wallhangings. Her characteristic designs are well recognized in Inuit galleries. |

The exquisite ivory miniatures and composite scenes of Pelly Bay, once traded to local missionaries, are still produced today. While there are restrictions on the export of ivory carvings, their intimate scale and precious quality are still prized by collectors.
